QUEER NIGHTCLUBS AS ECOSYSTEMS OF DESIRE AND DISPOSSESSION

A pulsing heartbeat is underneath all of the films which creates a bass-like, somewhat eerie vibration as one travels through the space. The other throughline is snippets from Julian Eastman’s piano piece “Gay Guerilla.” Occasionally, all of the films will show the same clip at once for a few seconds. The first film is the Introduction. This will be projected onto the underside of the stair and a black curtain at the base of the stair as you enter and will be a single speaker soundscape. It will slowly unveil itself as one enters into the space. The film provides snippets of themes present in the other five films and is meant to be viewed in snippets rather than in full. Visually, it combines daytime footage of clubs, snippets of the night, and protest footage, and the soundscape combines lectures, personal interviews, drag performances, and archival morality footage.
