QUEER NIGHTCLUBS AS REBELLION!

A pulsing heartbeat is underneath all of the films which creates a bass-like, somewhat eerie vibration as one travels through the space. The other throughline is snippets from Julian Eastman’s piano piece “Gay Guerilla.” Occasionally, all of the films will show the same clip at once for a few seconds. The third film is Queer Nightlife as Rebellion. This is a two screen projection with one speaker. The first film is projected onto a disco ball and an existing wall in the “corridor” area after the stage. It combines flashing red lights and text captions to beckon visitors into the space. The main film is revealed at the end of the corridor, projected onto a large brick column. It sits on top of a flashing peephole box with red lights inside. The film component is archival morality footage of how to have dinner with your family overlaid with more scandalous footage I took. The soundscape has stories and interviews in one speaker and clips of protest audio in the other speaker.
